Communication, you say?

Myth! Waiting for employees to do a great job before implementing a recognition program is truly getting the proverbial cart before the horse.

But the misconception is understandable. So where does it all start?

 

A recognition program does not start & end with the actual recognition.

It’s a process.

The process begins with clearly communicating the expectation.

It continues by regularly tracking and communicating progress.

Then it all culminates with the reward & recognition.

“But no one on my team deserves any recognition.”

Seriously, we could buy a private island if we had a nickel for every time a manager has said this.

Since it’s a hot button for many managers, here are a few helpful suggestions on how to gain momentum…

If your team doesn’t have anyone obviously worthy of praise right now, try starting small by tracking easy wins like attendance, teamwork, and attitude.

What is the biggest problem for your team members?

Start with that.

You can always up the ante as your employees’ behaviors improve and your recognition program elevates into becoming part of your culture.

And even if you aren’t struggling, it’s always a good idea to change things up and add (or sometimes detract) from the expectations that are being regularly tracked & rewarded.

Just remember, even if you’re starting small, there is one thing you must do…

Start.

PRO TIP:

Even if you only track one thing to start off, be sure to clearly communicate the expectation, post everyone’s progress in a public place, and reward the folks who do the best.

These are always best practices but they become crucial when trying to fix major problems and successfully get a recognition program (and your team) off the ground.

 

FINAL THOUGHT: If there is absolutely nothing you & your team’s leaders can say or do to motivate your team, you probably have the wrong people “on the bus.”
