Smile-11

A great number of studies conducted by doctors and scientists all over the world have proven the many benefits a cheerful attitude has on health, both physical and mental. And let’s not forget the long list of social benefits too! Here are some examples of what you can gain just by laughing:

  • Physical Health Benefits: boosts immunity, decreases levels of pain and stress, relaxes muscles, and prevents heart disease  **Did you know cardiovascular disease causes 1 in 3 deaths in the US?!
  • Mental Health Benefits: adds joy, eases anxiety and fear, relieves stress, improves mood, and enhances resilience (how fast you bounce back or adapt)
  • Social Benefits: Strengthens relationships, improves teamwork, and defuses conflict

No doubt, laughing can do some amazing things for you! It would be hard to laugh with a crappy attitude, though, right? Don’t miss out! Our source for the benefits you just read has even more compelling and highly usable tidbits: Laughter is the Best Medicine

Smiling: Cheaper Than Plastic Surgery

c81dd1dceaeb4ce230e962e456084d1cWant to be more attractive? Just smile. Seem silly? It’s not. Smiling makes your appearance more pleasant and causes you to look more attractive. If you’re ugly, it is recommended that you smile 100% of the time you’re in public. Kidding. But hope that made you smile.  : )

Another great thing about smiling: it’s contagious! Make someone’s day by infecting them with your good cheer. Maybe they will pass it on too!

The Value of a Smile

A smile costs nothing, but gives much.

It enriches those who receive, without making poorer those who give. 13abafcf9a4d67a7c55c37b4d6ceda63

It takes but a moment, but the memory of it sometimes lasts forever.

None is so rich or mighty that he can get along without it, and none is so poor, but that he can be made rich by it.

A Smile creates happiness in the home, fosters good will in business, and is the countersign of friendship.

It brings rest to the weary, cheer to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad, and it is nature’s best antidote for trouble.

Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed, or stolen, for it is something that is of no value to anyone, until it is given away.

Some people are too tired to give you a smile;

Give them one of yours, as none needs a smile so much as he who has no more to give.

Attitude of Gratitude

So how can you achieve a better attitude and open yourself up to all the possibilities of laughter and smiling? Start with gratitude. It’s genuinely difficult (almost impossible) to stay actively upset when you’re actively thankful instead.

melanieOur Sales Department Manager Melanie here at MyEmployees had a stroke of genius and got her team members to participate in the Gratitude Challenge for one month. To take the challenge, they started each day by writing down some of the things for which they were thankful.

Some team members were surprised by what they learned about themselves and by the actions the challenge inspired them to take. Here are some results one of our people that took the challenge achieved.

Sales Unicorn “Lady Atkins” on The Gratitude Challenge

The 1st few days are easy.  You realize you are thankful for the same things you always are, your family, kellyyour home, your friends, etc.  But somewhere around day 8 you start to run out of the usual suspects of things you’re grateful for, and you have to start reaching deeper.

Over the course of the month we participated in the challenge, I realized I was grateful for some of my extended family and missing them, so I reached out to them to tell them so. I realized I was grateful for some hard times in the past, realizing how the lessons learned from them have helped me recently.
The Gratitude Challenge is really about changing your perspective.  While you are full of gratitude for everything you have, you cannot be bitter or angry.  I truly believe that gratitude is the root of all happiness.  By starting your day reflecting on all of the positive things around you, it sets the tone for the rest of your day and puts you in a positive frame of mind.
